When you get right down to it, Web services is really just another way of integrating applications. With SOA, however, the integration and orchestration occurs at a higher level than it does with traditional application integration, where the focus is on synchronizing data structures and communications protocols. With Web services, the focus is on combining functional components in the most effective way to create business processes and workflows to solve a business problem.
In larger, more-complex deployments, the orchestration typically involves the use of a run-time ‘orchestration engine’ or services ‘broker’ that connects applications and services. The latest versions of traditional integration engines, such as Microsoft BizTalk andSybase eBiz Impact, are all capable of performing Web services integration; and MediSolution has extensive hands-on experience working with these tools.
