MediSolution is no stranger to SOA. We’ve been designing software using an SOA-like approach since the 1980s, albeit with Unix and Windows services rather than Web services, and using ASCII instead of XML as the language used to communicate with services; but now, with Web services and XML documents, we have an improved development paradigm based on standards that are more open, more flexible and more secure than ever before.
MediSolution is following a two-pronged SOA strategy for its complete suite of healthcare, financial and human capital management applications:
1. SOA-Compliant Applications
Most new applications and major enhancements to existing applications have been and will be designed and developed based on SOA and the use of Web services.
More specifically, MediSolution’s Electronic Health Record System (formerly MediClinic) is a Windows-based application suite built on a service-oriented architecture, and its Web Portal component (formerly MediWeb) uses Web services, some of which are also used in other MediSolution applications such as Patient Registration and Patient Scheduling. MediSolution’s Virtuo Financial Management System (Virtuo FMS), new web-based expense report and EDI modules are also based on SOA.
2. Individual Web Services
Individual Web Services being developed for use by MediSolution applications are also being offered on a subscription fee basis to customers and third-party systems integrators wishing to integrate those services into higher-level applications and business processes.
For example, a number of the functions that were exposed as Web Services when MediSolution’s Virtuo FMS application suite was reworked to SOA, such as General Ledger, Inventory, Requisitions, Procurement and Inventory, can now be exploited – individually or in any combination – by customers or by systems integrators building new applications on their behalf. The use of these proven services significantly shortens the application development and testing cycle and reduces cost.
